A Life Truly "Blessed"

The Ten Commandments were the foundation of the Old Covenant, written on stone to govern the actions of God's People. Yet, in the Sermon on the Mount, Christ offers us the Beatitudes as the foundation of the New Covenant. While the Ten Commandments tell us what to do, the Lord now reveals who we are to be, shifting the focus from the outward hand to the inward heart.

To be "blessed" is not merely a stroke of earthly good fortune. In the original Greek, the word is makarios, which signifies a profound, holy joy. As we read in the Orthodox Study Bible, this is a state of "spiritual exaltation"—a soul lifted above the storms of this world by the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Our goal is not a happiness that fades with the passing of the seasons or the seting of the sun. Instead, we cultivate the inner attitudes the Lord describes: humility, mercy, and purity of heart. By aligning our inner life with these Gospel precepts, we move beyond simple obedience and begin to participate in the very life of God.
